Hundreds of hotelworkers and their allies in clergy, civil society and the general populace converge on the Hyatt Andaz luxury hotel in West Hollywood, California, on Thursday, July 21, 2011 to protest Hyatt’s inattention to abnormally high injury rates among their housekeepers. The hotelworkers stage a protest in the center of Sunset Boulevard, shutting down traffic as housekeepers – normally invisible – perform their work tasks in the middle of the street at rush hour. The Los Angeles Police Department and West Hollywood Sheriffs Department arrest 24 protestors, which does not deter the rest of the crowd from continuing to march and picket against Hyatt’s unsafe business practices.

Benedict XVI: Abuse is a crime and a sin

Abuse of minors by the clergy is a crime and a grave sin against God and the dignity of the human person. Benedict XVI stated this during the two-day meeting with the Irish bishops, which was held in the Vatican to examine the situation in the Irish church. In the statement issued at the end of the work, it was noted that the Pope asked the bishops to intervene in a precise manner, to resolve this crisis with honesty and courage. Benedict XVI hopes that the meeting will serve to unite the voice of the bishops. The Pope noted that the overall general crisis of faith in the modern world impels the Church to a deeper reflection, in order to avoid any lack of respect for human dignity particularly on the …

The LONDON DECLARATION 2011 Peace for Humanity Conference by Minhaj ul Quran International

The LONDON DECLARATION 2011 Peace for Humanity Conference by Minhaj ul Quran International This declaration was announced at the Peace for Humanity Conference, organised by Minhaj-ul-Quran International and held under the auspices of Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, at the Wembley Arena in London, on 24th September 2011, and endorsed by the Grand Shaykh of Al-Azhar Dr Ahmad Muhammad Al-Tayyib, The World Association of Al-Azhar Graduates and religious representatives of all faiths, scholars, politicians, and 11000 participants present from all around the world. Preamble Recent decades have seen the world’s great faith and cultural communities torn apart by misunderstandings and mistrust to such an unfortunate degree that people of good intentions towards each other are now compelled to declare their unequivocal rejection of the beliefs and activities that divide them and their unreserved embrace of the beliefs and activities that unite them. We, the signatories to this ‘London Declaration for Global Peace & Resistance against Extremism’, affirm that all humans everywhere possess inherent dignity and immutable rights: these including freedom from poverty, oppression, fear and prejudice and freedom of belief, worship and expression. This declaration is being launched by Muslims for the Muslims of the world and for the rest of humanity. www.minhaj.org

WYD 2008 – The Pope invites religious leaders to unite

Religion is a contributor to peace, and not to violence, testifying to friendship and reciprocal sharing, and not to hatred. As a sign of the commitment to inter-religious dialogue and reconciliation among all people, a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI and about forty leaders of other faiths took place at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney. “In a world threatened by sinister and indiscriminate forms of violence,” the Pope said, religion “urges nations and communities to resolve conflicts through peaceful means and with full regard for human dignity.” To this end, Benedict XVI then reiterated that “human relations cannot be defined in terms of power, domination and self-interest.” The Pope then returned to the topic of caring for the environment, saying that by teaching “self-denial, temperance and a moderate use of the world’s goods…men and women are led to regard the environment as a marvel to be pondered and respected rather than a commodity for mere consumption.” The Pope also underlined that faiths should work together in the education of youth, as occurs in Australia, “where religion was a motivating factor in the founding of many educational institutions, and continues up to today to have an important place in academic curriculums.”
